LP2 - Planning Skills - Lower Secondary Level

Lesson: Make your digital study plan schedule for the exams

Audience & Context

Class/Course

Learning how to Learn , IT

Teacher Name

Created by Dennis Tarnaud (Sint-Ludgardisschool) & Joos Van Cauwenberghe (RHIZO 1)

Audience

Secondary school, first year (students are 11 - 13 old)

Lessons Topics

The goal of this workshop is for students to learn planning skills, during this online lesson. First, they will learn the benefits of planning. Then, they will create a paper-based weekly plan. Next, they will convert this paper plan into a digital plan using the 'smartschool' (a Flemish LMS) planner. If you don't have a smartschool account, you can use google sheets to make the digital plan. Finally, students will learn how to use this weekly plan for scheduling their exams.

OPEN

Hook/ Icebreaker/ Recap

5 min

  • Do a proper onboarding in you video conferencing tool, we're using zoom. We allow students to say hi, use some emoji's to say how they feel today and use the chat to score how they slept last-night (score between 1 - 5).

  • Ask students: what's the most stressful moment in your school career until now?

  • Then begin the workshop with a welcome speech and explain the goal of the workshop. Do not reveal the benefits of planning, as this will be covered in the first part of the workshop.

  • Video Conferencing (loom, zoom, meet, etc.)

  • Share google slide presentation.

Agenda

2 min

  • Outline the 5 parts of the workshop (split the workshop in two lessons if needed)

Google slides

Part 1

Activate

5 min

  • Brainstorm

  • Brainstorm with students on the benefits of planning. Write 'Benefits of Planning' in large letters in the center of the slide. Let students think about the advantages of planning and have some of them write their ideas in the zoom chat.

  • Google Slides

  • Chat in Zoom

  • Gather blank weekly planning templates.

Part 2

Content

5 min

  • Paper Weekly planning

  • Step-by-Step Explanation (5 minutes): Explain how to create the paper weekly plan. Go through the steps with the students and project Step 8, an example of a completed weekly plan, which can be enlarged and shown in full screen with F11.

Individual Work

30 min

  • Distribute blank weekly planning templates. Let students individually fill out their paper weekly plans.

  • Set up music in the background.

  • Keep students in the main zoom room, muting their microphones.

  • set up two breakout rooms in advance: one called 'ready' and one called 'Q&A'.

  • Explain to students when ready, to go the breakout room ready. When questions, go to the Q&A room (use the chat to post questions).

  • Give clear instructions on their tasks and behavior in the breakout rooms. Display 2 slides showing the gameshifting board to communicate expectations.

  • Two breakout rooms in zoom: ready and Q&A.

  • Google Slides with Agile Gameshifting boards for ready room and Q&A.

Group Discussion

5 min

  • Discuss challenges and questions that arose while filling out the paper plan. Review chat in the Q& room for that.

Part 3

Content

25 min

  • Smartschool Planner

  • Step-by-Step Explanation (5 minutes): Students are already familiar with the smartschool planner but not with creating appointments in it. Go through the steps with the students and show how to scroll in certain steps like Step 2 and 7. Project Step 6 as an example of a completed weekly plan in the smartschool planner.

  • Smartschool LMS

Individual Work

10 min

  • Have students convert their paper plans to their digital agenda. Assist with questions. Use the same two breakout rooms as in part 1. Students who haven't completed their paper plans should enter what they have in the smartschool planner.

  • Allow students to support each other in the Q&A room.

  • The goal here is for students to learn how to convert their weekly plan into a digital format, not to complete the entire week's planning in class as it would be too time-consuming.

  • Smartschool LMS

Group Reflection

Opinion Game with Zoom Chat(10 minutes): Prepare some poll questionnaires in advance and share them with the participants:

  1. I plan to use what I learned about planning in my daily life.

  2. Converting my weekly paper plan to the smart school planner was easier than I expected. Ask students at 'false' what they found challenging and how they would prefer it to be.

  3. I think a well-planned week will help me have less stress.

  4. Keeping track of my planned activities in a digital calendar seems useful.

  5. I think setting realistic goals in my exam planning will be difficult. Refer to buffer moments for when goals aren't met during study time.

  • Poll in Zoom

Part 4

Content

20 min

  • Exam Planning

  • Students need to study many topics for their exams. The weekly plan can be used as an exam schedule. In this part, students learn how to do this.

  • Class Explanation (5 minutes): In the webquest, there are two step-by-step guides on how students can make an exam schedule using either the paper weekly plan or the smartschool planner. Review both plans.

  • Smartschool LMS

Individual Work

15 min

  • List of Study Topics (15 minutes): Students perform the first step of the plan by creating a list of study topics they should study in advance, using the 'Results' module in smartschool.

  • Smartschool LMS

CLOSE

Closing & Reflection

15 min

  1. Feedback (5 minutes): Discuss the students' experiences during the workshop. Ask what they found interesting and what they learned. Have students think for 30 seconds about what score out of 10 they would give the workshop and have each student briefly state their score.

  2. Reflection (5 minutes): Have students fill out the exit ticket.

  3. Closing (1 minute): Conclude the workshop with a summary of the key points and thank the students for participating.
